LIONS  Little  League  Baseball  Team

Since 1950

The Ellwood City Baseball Little League was organized in 1950.  The organization was spearheaded by several adults who became the league's managers and coaches.  Larry Dinley was elected the first President and Denny Schill the League Secretary.  It joined the Little League Baseball in Williamsport, PA and became one of only 307 chartered leagues in the United States.

On May 8th the managers of the teams met to draft players at the American Legion hall.  The teams, coaching staffs and team colors were selected as follows: Elks - Alex Robuck and Bud Hudson (purple), Kiwanis - Chuck Timblin and James Burnett (maroon), Legion - Norman Pack and Wayne Baird (blue), Lions - Russell Butchelli and Carl Meise (blue), Moose - Dick Freidhoff and John Feerst (red) and the Rotary - Lee Shirley and James Aughenbaugh (blue).

Yes, this year the LIONS Little League Baseball team
won the Ellwood City Little League championship !

In a three-game series against the Elks, the Lions finished the championship run with a 12-2 victory.  A dedicated team of Lions was able to make the last game shine, shutting out the Elks after the first inning.  The team was highlighted by players such as Jason Montgomery and Ryan Bartolameo, who’s had a home run, a double and five RBIs in the past two games.  Bartolameo was joined in success at the plate by Devon Hudspath, who added a triple to the 10-point lead.

Defensively the Lions put up consistently good numbers on the mound with Shayne Sedgwick and Gino Joseph delivering most of the heat.  Sedgwick struck out eight in the last game and Joseph 15 in the game before that.  Both Joseph and Sedgwick have been consistent, having high strikeout records all through June, including Joseph’s 13 against SOI on June 19 and Sedgwick’s 10 against Moose on June 13.

With its postseason now at an end, most of the Lions team members can now look to the immediate future of The Ellwood City Little League in-house All-Star game.

The Lions players selected to the All-Star team are:  Shayne Sedgewick, Gino Joseph, Ryan Bartolameo, Jon Jefferson, Devon Hudspath, Broc Boariu, Jason Montgomery and Ben Dymond. The Lions team Coach Tony Joseph will also coach the Blue All-Star team.
