Ewing  Park  PICNIC SHELTER

After 4-yrs of fundraising for this community service project, the Ellwood City Lions Club built a Picnic Shelter in the Ellwood City Ewing Park.

Four years ago, the Ellwood City Borough constructed a new Basketball Court in the recreation area across the swimming pool.  The old court was obsolete, degraded and unsafe due to deteriorated concrete slab.  Also, being located within the picnic shelter area, it was a nuisance to the residents who tried to enjoy their picnic during the thumping of the basketball.

While the old basketball court continued to degrade, the Ellwood City Lions Club started to raise funds with a goal to build a Community Park Shelter in the Ellwood City Ewing Park.  The old basketball court was a perfect spot for a new picnic shelter, Shelter #3a.  Four years later, after numerous fundraisers and donations, the Lions Club raised $23,000.  But, the size of this community project required more than finances.  It required substantial cooperation and organization of businesses and individuals within our community.

With the approval of the Ellwood City Park and Recreation Committee and the Borough Council, the construction of Shelter #3a commenced on April 22, 2013 and the finishing touches were completed by the time the Arts, Crafts and Food Festival began.

Shelter #3a is not only beautiful, but practical and very accessible.  It provides (2) "van accessible" parking stalls for persons with disabilities and ADA ramping to the adjacent Shelter #4.  While the shelter was constructed by the Lions Club, the parking stalls and the ramping was provided by the Ellwood City Borough in cooperation with the Borough Manager, Mr. Dom Viccari.
